Tom put up a post a while back saying to get a blade and cut them out. Sounds like a good option. I got a needle in my thumb about 2 years ago now and its still in there!
Tweezers or nail clipper work best for me, and use some savlon or suda-cream to get rid of infection.
Soak your hand in hot/warm water to soften the skin then take a stanley blade or similiar and use it to open the skin around the needle. Once the skin is opened up a bit squeeze the skin and the head of the needle should protrude past the skin, when it does so pluck it out with a tweezers, may take a few attempts ...but when you do it's incredibly satisfying...oh and disinfect the tools first, enjoy...

Don't squeeze before you open the skin, as they just go deeper, 'cos that is the way that the pointy end is pointing!
