Hi lads, Got a new trek fuel EX8 there a month or two ago and noticed recently a little play in the front when i hold the front brake. there is no knocking from the headset and when i hold the bike off the ground and try and rock the upper fork or stem there doesn't seem to be any play in the headset there either. i torqued the brake disc correctly and callipers on the fork and the bolts on stem too. i'm guessing its the fork. They are the Fox float rl. looked up the Fox site and they say there should be a little play but i just haven't noticed anything before over the last 2 months. pretty sure its all ok but anyone can re-assure me would be sweet.

Oh ya bought the bike in england so can't really bring it back too easy.

Cheers people.

you've checked the headset, the bearings below the stem
hmmmm i would have thought they were the culprit and just a bit lose..

might be worth trying a good bike shop
if you're on the south of the city you could drop into the bike rack (cabinteely) and ask them to take a look, they know there stuff, or the cycleinn or cyclesuperstore in tallaght.

no point in sending the fork off to a fox servicer unless its defo the fork

bike rack is best imo

I've something similar with a Fox RL on my bike. How I get it is with both hands on the bars you apply the brake, and in doing do exert downward pressure on the fork, and that's when I feel what I think is a sticky seal, Just on that initial impact it seems to resist a little before pushing through. It can feel like something is loose all right.
It does not seem to effect the performance of the fork, and it holds pressure fine. I had put it down the forks needing service, and even though your fork is only 8 months old there's always a chance just just got a bum RL.

It might be worth ringing Jim O'Carroll who run's OC Tuning and is an official FOX service agent - you can get contact info here (http://www.spoke.ie/2008/09/18/james-ocarroll-irelands-answer-to-tim-flooks/). Explain to him the problem and he should be able to tell you pretty quick if its the fork or not (and let me know too :D).

Cheers richie. sounds like thats the problem. read on the fox service page that there is a little play between the bushings and fork leg but when the oil heats up it fills up the gap. suppose even the oil is cold these days. i'll have a look at it halfway throough a spin and see if its the same. if not i'll get in touch with OC Tuning, and let you know. thanks again, Chris
