great day, my first mtb race in Ireland at this level and loved it, the old asthma a flared up on the second lap so had to retire! roll on next race, thanks for roars and support lads! it does help! i think Oisin and Fergal had a good race from where I was marshalling and Cormac too.....

nice photos liam. What a day, savage course, my body is destroyed .. pizza is the onyl answer!
Well done to everyone* who took part .. savage effort lads, especially for those who'd never raced before
I kept hearing people shouting my name as i went past .. was nearly delerious by the end so no idea who it was half the time .. but it definitely helps
*except shane, the banger .. riding sports! still, thanks for the bottles and the abuse .. kept me going.

good race? me? I was in pain for most of that.
Conor, John, Graham and I have a good battle thoughout the race. It was an excellent course and the MAD turnout was great.
I didn't think I was that wrecked at the end, that was until I climbed the stairs to my apartment!
Oisin

Great race. I was getting serious cramps towards the end but just managed to keep the pace. The pressure was on!
Thanks for people doing the bottles and shouting/cheering/general support. It makes a huge difference.

Yep well done Oisin for winning the expert, was a cool race even if I did feel like I was going to die before the end... Defo hats of to shane, martin and every one else who was chearing for every one it makes the world of difference.
Now all I have to do is train that bit harder to keep paddy behind me next time.
Yeah - well done to all who took part, especially the people new to racing. That was a pretty savage course to start out on! It was great riding around having people cheer you on the whole time and again, thanks to the bottle hander upper people. Oisin, you'll be joining me soon ;)
My race, I felt fit but not overly fast - could have done more laps when I finished (which is a sign I should have been pushing harder) but it's early days in the season still. I'll write an artivle about the race tomorrow on my blog. Now it is time to eat :)

Same as above, well done to Oisin, that leaders jersey makes you a target now! Thanks to Barry, and the Banger for bottles, and all the MAD marshals, the cheers along the way help greatly. I actualy enjoyed most of the race, its good to have Graham, Cormac etc to race with. Ollie, ill catch you next time!!

There is some serious training going to be done over the next few weeks and months to stop as many masters cathing me. I was pretty worried when I lined up with the expert pack but I have to say it was a good race as the masters were just behind so I found my pace among some of the masters / expert and fought for position with them.
Well, suppose it was a good course to cut your teeth on as I'm sure most courses are not as hard as that one.. I hope.. enjoyed it myself but felt I could have pushed harder.
Well done to all the experts and masters, the look of pain on your faces at the end.. wasn't encouraging for me. LOL

Had a great time for my first race. Thanks to all the people cheering us on from the sidelines, it's really helps to turn the wheels! Congrats to everyone who was there today especially to all the people who suffered in experts and master's. And well done Oisin with the win!
Here's a few photo's taken today. Curtesy of barry who took most of them!

well, that was great, really enjoyed it, track dried-up so nicely during the race!
big thanks to the supporters - Martin whose big roars were much appreciated, Shane L, Sean, the bottlers - nice one lads, there were loads more of ye too at various places - thanks a lot
awesome performance by Oisin - really pleased to see that jersey on him - nice trophy too!
the 6-biked banger did well doing the last few k on a flat!
Steve was going hard and fast too - pity about the puncture but he'll rip along in next race!
Young Liam did very well in Sports - on a big travel bike too...
Well done also to all the lads who moved up a category
Morgan - I hope your leg isn't too bad!
I felt like I could have done another lap - though felt like I was pushing hard enough during the 3 laps - not sure why that is, maybe need to concentrate on power training more than interval/endurance, though never really do endurance training...
I might just do what Oisin does..., hang on! I already do what Oisin does!
hmmm maybe need stronger gels :-)
anyway - looking fwd to the next one, I'll start the training plan now...
Martin

That was a deadly race. Really enjoyed it. Was going really well the whole way round. No crashes unlike the Saturday which I was slightly surprised about, was half thinking it would be an ambulance job to get home. Unfortunately got a puncture on the last lap and by the time I found somebody to comandeer a wheel off, my lead had wasted away... Next time though!
Big congratulations to Oisin, knew you had it in you.. One of many to come I hope. Big thanks to Martin, Aisling and Aine for the encouragement. It really helps. Also big thanks to Barry and Shane, very pro job you had going there. Sorry if I sounded like demaning 10yr old!
Til next time race fans....
P.S. Oisin Fitzbottler bottle it or something?

what a day!
during lap 1, I had decided to call it a day when I reached the finish..
but no! sports did 2 laps, I'll do 2
In fact.. f it!! I'll finish it
glad I did but the cramps were unbearable in the last 20 minutes!
really enjoyed it though
does that make me twisted?
It was funny, passed Cormac on the singletrack of the last lap
"Cormac the race is on, I'll wait for you at the finish!!"
literally 2 seconds later, I crashed, cramped and Ahern left me for dust couldn't catch him! My only consolation is of course his resemblence to Bert Der Hund Von Baskerville :)
And as for the other Bert in the sports race, Dr Rob you better not have done well, your current nickname might just get an extension
Banger Bert that is
the support really was class today!
Big thanks to all the lads around the track for shouting us on, 6 bikes, Baz and all the feed station crew ,Shane Lavelle, Colm and Marshal of the day Martin, giving me time updates and all "Conor and Cormac are fifteen seconds ahead, CATCH THEM!!!"
I'll catch ye next time! I think some secret training is in order
Well done on all the great results too!!

Well done to all racers!
Oisin - you're awesome
Ryan - very good result
Thanks for the support, I was a zombie for the most of the race so had no idea whatsoever who was encouraging me... but big thanks!
I think it was my first race in masters and only thing I can say is that I am well prepared at this time of year, not yet. Haven't done even 500 km so far this year - so I am pleased to cross the finish line not as the last one...
Hope to see you guys at next one!!
Take care!

well done lads, some great results there! i'm so annoyed to have missed this, was my favourite race of last year. Hopefully i'll be able for round 2 (i wrecked one of my knees while out on my bike and was told to do no exercise until it's healed)

To echo all the comments above - thanks to everyone who came along to help out and to shout encouragement. It's great to see so many people getting involved. Hopefully we'll get as big a crowd up to the race in the North in a fortnight.
My race didn't go so well. I had three bad crashes - one on the rock and two on the singletrack. I thought I'd have to pull out because I couldn't bend my knee for a few minutes. After a bit of shouting I got on the bike though and got going. I was way behind at that stage so I ended up going at my own pace - not great in a race. I spent 1.5 hours in the bath last night digging gorse thorns out of my leg. Still, a day out is a day out and I enjoyed the day overall. Well done Oisin on your win but I'm a bit dubious about that jersey you were wearing.
I just put a bit of a report of my race on my blog:
http://ryansherlock.blogspot.com/
Imagine if we had to race in todays weather...
Well done all who raced yesterday, especially the first timers and those who moved up a rank. Congratulations to Oisin Boydell, what a savage...

what happened to Ritchie??
Richie
10-03-2008, 05:43 PM
Good question Martin - let me field that one :-)
Saturday evening I came down with a pretty nasty tummy bug/food poisoning which had me kneeling at the porcelain altar for most of the night. To say I was dehydrated on Sunday would be putting it mildly. The up side is I ate my first solid food today which has stayed put, so optimistic that I'll be back on the bike in a few days, and will be out in Tollymore. Pretty disappointed as broke my ass getting the bike on Friday, and up until about 6pm Saturday I was going (even swapped the racing ralph for a more knobbier tyre).
Now I know what you're all thinking - sudden bout of food poisoning the day before a mucky, rainy, windy race... and I thought the same thing too....
someone had to have spiked my food! I'm putting together a list of prime suspects... Conor, you're on top!

10-03-2008, 07:26 PM
Sure did - ended up getting the reaction xt cos they could not find the k24 in my size (it was in the warehouse but not where the put it, or something like that). Sweet bike, only managed an hour in Leadmines early on Saturday morning so will take some time to get used to it - also will need to switch the brakes around before I have an accident, or get used to it :-)

Hang on a sec there Richie. I did'nt poison your grub. Ireland lost, you drowned your sorrows in Kieleys, or Time, or somewhere with 9 pints and 3 brandys( for the nerves, do'nt you know!). If your looking for someone to blame, look at Eddie O'Sullivan, not me!!
Oh, and Barry. All the new fancy bikes in the world wont help him. I said before, I'm at the start of a 9 year training program for the Vets. Richie only has 5(?) years left before he joins them!!

Go on outta Conor with yer 'not training' - your spins around north county Dublin are well known... and I loved that statement when we were in Djouce last weekend about one leg being shorter than the other and you might not be able to race... just lulling us into a false sense of security!

Its true I tell ya! I'm 6ft on one leg, and 5ft 4ins on the other!!! Thats why I ride bikes....If I went hillwalking, I'd never get to the top of any mountain. I'd just keep going round and round and round.....!
Don't believe him Richie, I was talking to Aine yesterday at the race. She was detailing Conors training regime. I don't want to go into too much detail but oxygen tents were mentioned... also something about elites next year...

jaysus lads, you should see the state of my house after listening to that cd fergal gave me, it attracted metalheads from everywhere, and soon my house a one big mosh pit, which then escalated into a circle of death, then finally into a wall of death. basically what i am trying to say is that my house now looks like this thanks to fergal.
but man, it was worth it.
