I am going to get a small tub and try it first for over the weekend but just wondered which one might be best to try.

I've started using the standard High5 one. Does the job. By the way its €39 for a tub in Cyclesuperstore but only €26 for the exact same one from CRC.

you'll be putting yourself through some hardship, I'd take a multivitamins every day, and on the build up too, you won't be able to eat as healthy as you need, some of the necessaries would be in the pills though

it sounds crazy but, two teaspoons of Blackstrap Molasses every morning.

you may laugh now, but on day 3 when you don't want to get out of bed (even though its in a tent) you'll appreciate it.

gives you loads of energy!

and only takes a few days to get used to the taste.

I'm taking it at the moment and I find it class

I agree with Graham on the multi vitamins (especially vitamins c) - not sure about the Molasses - how about chewing some tabaccie while yer at it? :-)

Defo experiment with some different energy drinks on long spins, and notice how you feel during the spin, and probably more importantly for you, the next day. I started off with the high 5 drum, which defo kept me ticking over on the long spins. But I always found that I was fecked the next day. So after a bit of research, I found Zym (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=20326) . Its basically an Electrolyte tablet which replaces salts (lost during sweating) and vitamins. So now I mix my high 5 (which already has some electrolytes) with a Zym. The day after a spin I feel great now, but again, its a case of trying out a few drinks and seeing the effect.

post-spin (defo don't take it during a spin/race) this stuff is great:

...and this is why:

Athletes and sports nutritionists have known for many years that the most critical time for nutrition is directly after training. This period of time has become known as "window of opportunity" where our bodies demand certain nutrients to repair and rebuild tissues damaged during training.

Leading sports nutritionists and exercise physiologists agree that when this is fully taken advantage of training benefits can be greatly accelerated. Nutrition X have developed Recovery Accelerator Matrix as the No.1 post training product available worldwide.

RAM was developed by leading exercise physiologists. RAM contains the perfect ratio of carbohydrates to protein to speed muscle glycogen replenishment and rebuild muscle protein after exercise, anti-oxidants to reduce post exercise muscle damage and glutamine to help reduce muscle stress. RAM is designed to:

? restore electrolytes and water

? refill glycogen stores

? reduce muscle stress

? rebuild muscle

RAM works on the interaction of key physiological and nutritional factors that enable muscles to operate at peak levels. The RAM system establishes four practical principles that athletes can incorporate into their daily training to optimize recovery and achieve their full potential.

1. Restore electrolytes and water: Studies have shown that fluid replacement must occur directly after exercise. Electrolytes can accelerate rehydration by speeding up intestinal reabsorbtion of fluids.

2. Refill glycogen stores: Recent research has shown that protein and the amino acid arginine when combined with a carbohydrate supplement can stimulate insulin levels in a synergistic way. The ratio and type of carbohydrates to protein are extremely important for this synergy. By stimulating insulin with carbohydrates, protein and arginine muscle glycogen is restored rapidly. This improves performance and increases recovery.

3. Reduce muscle stress: During exercise there is a build up of free radicals. Free radicals are responsible for damage to muscle cells. In addition to free radicals, exercise also stimulates cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone that increases the breakdown of protein. Intense exercise also has a negative effect on the immune system.

As we now have a greater understanding of the causes of muscle stress, we have identified agents to help minimize it. Vitamin C and E are strong anti oxidants shown to reduce free radical build up during exercise. Insulin has also been shown to reduce the build up of cortisol normally seen during exercise thereby helping to maintain muscle protein. The amino acid glutamine has also been shown to stimulate the immune system.

4. Rebuild muscle: Immediately after exercise a rebuilding process is started to repair muscle proteins damaged during exercise. Recent studies suggest that insulin is a strong stimulus of the muscle rebuilding process by increasing amino acid transport into muscles and by preventing the breakdown of protein. This relationship between glycogen replenishment, insulin and muscle rebuilding is the foundation of RAM.

A secondary aspect of the rebuilding process is the need for protein and glutamine. Protein not only stimulates the replenishment of glycogen stores by activating insulin but also provides the essential building blocks for muscle repair.

Recommended Use: : Directly after training mix 3 scoops (106g) with 300ml water.
