Guys, im looking to start a debate and ask a few questions.
I was running a Hope XC hub on my bike (it came with the bike when i got it so i dont know all the details). Long story short the hub is now out of action.
So i am deciding what hub to go with another hope (which im not sure which model is for XC), can anyone help here? or maybe an XT ... is there any comparison ? somehow i doubt it as ive never been impressed by shimano hubs.
The measurements on the hubs eg 12mm what does refer to ? also the longer lengths like 130mm im guessing thats the width between dropouts.
Any help or advise would be good.

Personally I'd go with another Hope hub (the Pro II is the current XC model). They're pretty much fit-and-forget - while the bearings in XT take a bit of care. They also come in different colours and are nice and loud. 12mm is the size of the axle (standard quick release), 130mm is the dropout spacing.
You say your current hub is out of action - it could probably be fixed up if you wanted - new bearings and freehubs are easy to obtain.
Hope Pro 2 hubs definitely, reasonably light, bullet proof, and they have handy adapters available (not included) which mean you can change from QR to 15mm or 20mm so gives pretty good future proof compatibility.
By all accouts the bearings are reasonably easy to change too if it comes to it.
And more importantly as Morgan pointed out they come in a range of pimping colours.

I have XT wheels (pre-built with hubs and rims) and they are grand, I haven't done anything maintenance wise to them since gettin them a couple of years back but thats not to say they aren't gonna fall apart, soon.....they seem to be running pretty smooth at the minute and the freewheel is silent (if thats important). But I have to say I always really like the look of Hope hubs and I like the sound of them as well.
If you wanna spend big money Josef get yourself some Chris Kings, they'll last a lifetime

it kinda depends what you're looking for really. The hope one looks nicer, but is about 3 times the price of the XT one, and a million times more noisy, but its hard to get XT in 6 bolt these days.
As for servicing, i did have an XT hub where the freehub failed after two years, apart from that i never touched them (except for taking them apart to see how they work). Takes about 20 mins to fully strip them down, clean and regrease.
Morgan .. is 12mm not the bolt through rear hub (rather than a QR one?)

one consideration, if you change the hub, you've got to get the wheel rebuilt.. which makes it a pricey venture
as Morgan says, try fixing up your hope one, maybe the bike rack in Cabinteely. If its posible, it'd be far less expensive than replacing it
failing that, if you're getting a new hub, you're sometimes better off getting a whole new wheel as you have to shell out for the wheel build (depends on the condition and how good your rim).
As Marko says, XT hubs are aok, I got sick of replacing the freehub on my Sun Ringle dirty flea (x4), so I got an XT hub with dt swiss x455 rim (€80 from crc) and its going strong for the last 6 months

This was my old wheel I think which I bought off Hamilton (remember him?). Would definitely reccommend getting the hub looked at instead of a new hub as it is a top quality wheel laced with the best DT Swiss spokes and it would be a pity to have to buy new for it.

If you do go down the new hub route and have to get the wheel rebuilt try the Cycle Surgery (Dundrum). Was chatting to a couple of the lads from there and they should be pretty cheap building the wheel.
If you do go down the new hub . I think you meant go down to the pub

everything but the shell can be bought for servicing the XC hub. Hope are a good company in this regard, you can still buy spare parts for products discontinued years ago. Curb your consumption. Reduce, Reuse, Reasdasdasd.

Rumour on the street is that they send all their wheel builds to James O Carroll, so probably better going to him direct!

James' website is http://www.octuning.ie/
Although I hear a MAD member is going to be getting into the wheel business very soon.

That was 'the new hub route' ...
can't believe you didn't notice the extra word there. It was even underlined, in italics and red just to make sure nobody missed the word... :D
They have there own wheel building jig out there as far as I know... though it could have been a very elaborate oversided bottle opener
Had a couple of beers last night so hopefully that should sort out all the Freudian slips.
