Can anyone tell me the difference between 62a and 70a on the Maxxis Advantage - XC? Also am looking to buy on line and it has folding vs. wire? Is that to do with how it is packaged?

The folding vs wire relates to the tyrewall bead that runs around the tyres edge. Folding contains some lightweight plastic stuff and consequently folding is lighter, more expensive and more flexible. Wire contains wire, is heavier, cheaper and less flexible. I like wire....great tyre...

The 62a and 70a likely refers to the rubber compound used. One will likely be (theoretically :-P ) softer/stickier/more durable/more pleasurable than the other.

Go with the folding version - the outside edge of the wheel is possibly the single most important area for weight saving (as it's rotating mass and thus has or needs greater inertia to accelerate)

i bought the maxxis advantage with a wire bead in 2.1"

they are the best tyres i have ever tried, the grip is unreal, riding them in djouce during the race last week was an experience and a half! i have never had so much grip on off camber roots. this evening i was doing alot of climbing on the lose rocky stuff up on 3rock and they were performing amazingly well.

its well worth getting yourself a set.

however, i don't know much about the different compounds but there is a little bit of info on thier website:

www.maxxis.com

Super Tacky is a compound with a durometer rating of 42a. This means that it is a very soft compound. It is used exclusively in our downhill and freeride lines. The soft compound allows the rider to have superb surface traction. These tires are used for racing.

For recreational riding you should go with a harder durometer tire. Maxxis offers our cross country tires in a 70a compound, which delivers ultimate performance and a long-lasting tread life.

Oh actually I recall now, I had the softer, stickier one before and boy does it grip, but it certainly wears down quickly also. But whatever, you may as well get the best one available, treat yourself-your worth it....

I used to love the maxxis advantages, they're good alright, and virtually never puncture, but I've just changed to these, and I'll never go back, theylaugh at off camber trails, and are great for climbing and mud. Won lots of awards too.

they're tubeless, so if you ever decide to go tubeless, you're half way there.

and most importantly, the logo is white, so it goes much better with the canyon ;)

Thanks Guys for the advice! Me think me'll buy the 70a folding tyre set!

No more snotting myself unnecessarily and hopefully a lot less bruises!! ;)

Thanks again! J!
