MAD Website

In an unprecedented show of organisation we’ve already planned some spins for this weekend. We’ll be having our regular club spin (http://www.madmtb.com/wordpress/2009/05/12/regular-club-spins-starting-again/) on Saturday morning. This spin is open to riders of all levels. The destination this week is Masseys Wood and the Hellfire club. Leaving the Merry Ploughboy (http://www.mpbpub.com/location.html) pub at 10am.
Sunday’s spin will be a bit more extreme. Leaving Kindlestown car park at 10am we’ll take in GOTD and the Sugarloaf summit. This will be technically and physically challenging spin so if you’re unsure, ask before coming along.

I've only started a couple of months ago and there was no man (i.e. me :o) left behind on beginners spins. (The fitter members will just do a second loop afterwards probably).
From what little knowledge I have of Masseys and Hellfire I dont think they are too difficult or technical, but the only time I was there was passing through as part of a longer trip... so, there might me more difficult parts I haven't seen yet.
either way you should go. there's only one way to get better :)

yep .. as dave says you'll be fine .. a working bike, helmet, spare tube, pump, some water and maybe a chocolate bar or something in case you need the energy.
Masseys is a great place for a beginner as theres lots of little trails and plenty of fun bits for learning and practicing on ... handily there's also a pub at the end of it!

So, went up to Ballinastoe Wednesday, have to say I definitely have to work on the fitness! Had to push the bike up some hills, but liked the small technical tracks. I am planning on joining 2morrows spin though, if am too slow I can just do my own thing and practice a bit. Can someone give their mobile number in case i get lost? Only starting to get to know the treks and havent been to Saturdays venue yet, thx
Anyone has a spare place in a vehicle ?

What are people thinking for the long spin afterwards? Start and finish from the Merry Ploughboy? Or Taylors?

Damian (mara),
its actually closer, and a much easier climb than 3 rock which you've done before loads of times!

yeahhh, you're right :), don't know why I thought it's somewhere close to B/stoe. Thanks for the offer Flora but I can cycle there no problem.
See you tomorrow!

Soooo tender... asked a nurse and was advised to go to A&E to be watched...
Take care Dave, but surely the obvious solution is to have the nurse watch you ;)

Thinking of giving this a go, how technically and physically challenging will this be?

What happened??
We were doing some of the small drop-offs in Masseys. Suddenly DaveS comes tearing down the trail and aims for a rocky protrusion on the edge of the drop. He shouts "Looks out fuckheads!" before launching himself into the air, doing a forward 180 and piledriving his head into the ground. It was pretty rad.

Kindlestown and GOTD are pretty straightforward. Sugarloaf is a big long steadly climb on rocks and grass. You'd need to have your climbing legs with you. The descent is rocky and steep to start then extremely fast around the side of the mountain.

lovely, I'll be there, pity my new helmet cam didn't arrive yet, still, there will be radness regardless, looking forward to the super fastness and mine fields of rocks...

Thank lads, I'm grand. No broken bones, no head trauma, just a lot of sore muscle and reduced mobility at the moment. The doctor said it wouldn't have been the fall that caused it, but if anyone were to start telling me jokes while I was lying winded that would have been increadibly dangerous!!!
...McDonalds/Michael Jackson Burger....

She's married to a mate, pregnant with about a week left and didn't have an x-ray machine in the house at the time
What happened??
The real story:
there was a short track with an easy way down and a way with a drop-off. On this track there was also a long flexible branch that clung onto you for a second. While putting up with this irritation the two times I passed by it before, on the last attempt I decided to try to give it a wider birth. Unfortunately, this had thre reverse of the desired effect, it irratated me longer and left me in the wrong place, with no Plan B and not enough time to think of one. I realised I was in trouble and I'm not sure whether I kept my fingers over the brakes, which if I had may have resulted in bad instinct... Either way I decided to impress everyone with some breakdancing
The moral of the story was if I'd taken two seconds to bend that branch out of the way I'd have been fine.
The Hollywood version:

Hang on you never mentioned anything about the orphan filled bus that had to swerve to miss a lanky git on a bike that I saved from going into a ravine by using my spine an a guard rail. Again nothing about the 40 or so members of the 'Fit Pert Virgins Running Club' who saw the whole thing and whose bras disintegrated at the sight of such strenght, bravery and my awesome body!
Seriously though, after the virgins were wisked away by their coaches for fear that they'd have to rename their club, there were three women left. Not one comforted me, offer to kiss it better or gave me a whinnie the Pooh plaster :(

Hi guys,
thanks for the spin on Saturday and especially for the tips and minding me in the back. Definitely looking to do more of that stuff and build up my fitness. What are the plans for next Saturday, is there a chance of a spin going ahead and would it be manageable for a beginner?
