Heading over for Sleepness next week and I'm preparing for the worst. What's a good UST tyre for horrendous muddy conditions?

The Hutchinson Toro (http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=35682) I had on the rear wheel on Sunday was rockin'...

not sure about UST .. but at mayhem the other year the best thing to have was Continental cross country 1.5 tires. Mainly cos they stopped your bike from completely jamming up with mud

http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=18896

it even describes them as being ideal for cyclo cross on 26 inch wheels!

I used to use the bulldog, and found them unbelieveably good!!! The Toro is their replacement and look pretty much identical, so another vote for them

I'd the 2.1's and they did have a very narrow profile, at first I thought it looked too narrow, but it did the trick nicely
They also rolled real quick too.

only drawback was the price, but I did find they were worth it.

I think Arek uses them too

forgot, don't bother trying to run the NON UST ones tubeless, waste of time, they just burp air all the time and you'll end up running crazy high pressures..

I found the Ignitors very good on Sunday (half worn too), and anyone who raced knows the conditions there

Yeah I agree great tyres for battle of the Somme trenches style races. Really skinny and rubbish grip on anything apart from mud but in deep mud they are the only tyre that will cut through it and not clog up. They were perfect for Mountain Mayhem. I wouldn't use them near roots or rocks though but they are perfect for extreme mud conditions.

If I was getting a more all round mud tyre I'd probably try Toros on Richies advice - he was raving about them last Sunday.

Was that the 1.85? Would certainly help with the fork-clogging I was having.

Yep. Had a 2.1 Nobby Nic on the front that struggled.

Nonsense, 2.1 Nobby Nic was fine on Sunday.
Thinking of a pair of them in 1.8 for SITS...

Exactly - I struggled with 2.1's, a 1.8 would have helped a lot. Last weekend it was almost a case of the skinnier the tyre the better.

I hope this thread does not cause a run on mud tyre's - accuweather's long range forecast (next 2 weeks) is looking not that bad...ye could be racing on dusty trails!

I'm thinking of getting one of these...http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Panaracer_Fire_Mud_Pro_Folding_Tyre/-762394212/

I have Kenda Nevegals on at the mo, and they were ok on Sunday. Shed the mud quickly too.

not conti vapor pro's anyhow :)

does anyone use summer tyres in Ireland? be changing the whole time !!

edit: actually the conti xc 1.5's are a good choice as someone suggested , they are fast and cut through the mud, not the most comfortable for rocks but a good race tyre

Conti Vapor?

They are actucally on the bike ready for Sleepless as it happens, just too lazy to change them

so do I !!!

Although I still have to fix a puncture, damn gorse

They are pretty good enven in mud, no tread to get clogged up

I couldn't decide what to get, but i had to ditch the Conti Mountain Kings no matter what.

Fitted a new pair of Nobby Nics last night, but also bought 1.85 Toros and a pair of Panracer Trail Rakers 1.95 http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=34664
The Toros are a med/hard compound, which seems a little too firm, but the Panracers are softer and look like they'd grip to anything!

Pish posh to all this talk of mud tyres...
I'm putting dry tyres on and attacking the shclomp with an air of optimism and brio.
Failing that, I'm going to glide over the mud like a fecking hovercraft.

Got pair of specialized sauserwind 1.8s just before kilruddery. Well recommended. Very fast rolling and good grip, cut through the mud well and cleared quickly too. Not as comfortable as crossmarks on rough stuff but a hell of a lot better through any kind of schlomp.Pretty cheap too for tubeless, think cycleways have them for about 27euro each. Good luck over the week end lads.

eh?
special sausage wind?
Morgan and the lads will have plenty of that with the big fry-up they intend bringing over with them
Black-puddin'-O'Brien is their secret ass-scent-deployment weapon....they will gust their way to victory!!!
Yaayy!!!

I ran Sauserwinds for a while - nice tyre, but they stopped sealing after about 6 weeks - seemed like the bead stretched or perished or something.
Schwalbe only from now on...

If you are not in a hurry, watch craigslist and research the bikes you see. You can get some nice bikes for cheap on CL, but be sure to google it first. Dont buy anything less than very good condition.

Where the hell did that come from??
Just goes to show how non-exclusive this forum is – having the mental aptitude of a peanut is no barrier!

Then again, there was one bike on Craigslist worth a look at – sissies need not apply!
