ok so after about a year of using my hack bike for commuting to work and college and not once changing gears in that time, i have decided to convert to the single speeded side of life. i use the ratio 14t in the rear and 48t in the front, and find it fine for buzzing around town. the only problem is that as it is an older "vintage" style bike, the cassette is locked on in a different manner than modern locking rings. i have a picture of the offending member here:

basically i don't know what tools i need for removing this old type of locking ring. i will be getting a singlespeed conversion kit in the very near futue so would like to get this little issue sorted asap.

cheers in advance.

You call that a technical hitch - look at the state of the website!

Anyway - that's a screw on freewheel and you'd use a pin-spanner to take it off. Like this:

It's not worth buying one for a single use though so you could get a shop to take it off for you or improvise with a hammer and punch, or a needlenose pliers.

Bear in mind, when converting that wheel to singlespeed use you won't be able to stick a single cog on the back (since there's no freehub body). You might be able to thread a BMX freewheel onto the hub though and try to fix up the chainline.

sorry to get you exited sean.

but if anyone has an old 8 or 9 speed back wheel that is reletively true and has a rim braking surface knocking around, i'll take it off their hands, my single speed conversion depends on it!!

He's trying to win you away from us Barry, beware of men with mustaches bearing gifts.

thats too bad, my alliances lie firmly with mad, although i wouldn't say no to a few more gifts if they were to be sent my way.

anyway the epic forum is way too confusing, i don't know how they get anything done over there, what with all that talk of shifters, goobers, and pedals...
