Rear hub rebuilt

Was cleaning and greasing the rear wheel hub (Shimano XT QR) bearings as wheel was running a bit stiff and rough. Noticed that the drive side cone and bearing race were fairly badly pitted (though the bearings were all fine). I'm guessing the hub only has a short bit of life left in it as a result.

Q) Does anyone KNOW if this is a new hub \ wheel rebuild job or can the bearing races be replaced.

Just noticed that Mark asked practically exactly the same question for the same hub make/model a few posts earlier, must be the season for hubs dying !

You can change the freehub on the drive side with this http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=1161 , the bearings sit within a bearing race in the freehuib so your hub is OK. But you'll need to get a cone from a shop, I haven't got round to doing this yet, I would be interested to see how you get on. Once you've replaced the freehub and the cone it will be grand, might as well stick some new bearings in there as well. I got new bearings from this place http://www.allterraincycles.co.uk/product/2214.html give me a shout if you need to know sizes.

sjscycles.co.uk have a load of different cones and axle assemblies available. Check shimano tech documents to find out exactly what you need. I was looking to refurb an old deore hub but after the 7.50 shipping, bearings and complete axle assembly, it was only two euro cheaper than a brand new hub from CRC: free QR, freehub and grease :-)

... not the case for XT bits though.

Thanks Mark/Rob for the info. €29 for a new freewheel (and still need cone), €49 for a new complete hub but still have to get the wheel rebuilt........

Hmmmmmm.....

Mind you, I've more than one wheel that needs rebuilding now !
