Not cheap but really really nice: Specialized BG Pro SL Bib Short

http://www.specialized.com/bc/SBCEqProduct.jsp?spid=37913

Got a couple of pairs from Cycleways (medium for me) nice and light and good form fitting - chammy is best I've seen. Used to use the Cannondale ones a lot but I think I found my new favorite.

Also, plugging Specialized again but... The BG SL Jersey is cool. Nice airy fabric and a FULL LENGTH zip! Great for the summer (if we have one). I'm a medium in it, fits nicely and is long enough in the body.

Oh - that saddle - I have no idea how people can use things like that... I've done 8 hour rides on my skinny saddle and been perfect afterwards but one of those things... 10 minutes ouch...

what price for the bib shorts Ryan?

looking to get some decent ones and these look good, and they come Sherlock tested and approved so that's gotta be a good thing :-)

I have a couple of sets of the Aldi/Lidl bib shorts and they make a good second layer when it is just that bit colder. Check out Wiggle and the Gore stuff, that is what I have been using since I started racing and it seems to wear pretty well.

Oh and its all discounted on wiggle...

the white logo will go nicely with the white accents on the new club gear, that and my white gloves, white helmet and overshoes.

God, I'll look good!!!!

THEN... I'll start trainin' !!

Expensive, is pretty damn expensive... This is full retail - http://mcconveycycles.com/products.php?plid=m5b0s56p3498

Maybe find them discounted somewhere - really amazing shorts though. I was never one to spend a lot of money on shorts... Most of mine are as cheap as chips but since I started spending money on them I have noticed a difference, more comfortable, less creeping - just feels nice. A lot of € though, but when you spend lots of hours in the saddle...

On another note, especially for the men (I did this a while back and am really happy about it), spend money on a saddle that you really really like - you might have to do this a few times (cycleways and cyclesuperstore do demos) but get one that fits you perfectly and then put one on each of your bikes... If you don't like a saddle after a couple of rides, bin it (or sell it)

Sorry - that was my general equipment rant...

matches the new club gear so well, that one might think we had hope as a sponsor

Sean

err, rather than buying stuff which matches the club gear, why not actually buy the club gear?

just a thought...

diamondG

that would involve delayed gratification..

hmmmmmm

A small MAD reunion was had at Aldi Rathmines ;) This cyling gear goes like nothing else.

Went to the Aldi in Parnell Street afterwards and it seemed to have a bigger stock available than the Rathmines one and there was more stuff left when I was there at 10am, including an outdoor jacket that would be suitable as a warm cycling jacket that they don't have on their website.

hehe ^^ , there is was minding my own business about to chain up my bike when Mel comes creeping up. The gear is pretty good. Got 2 pairs of shorts, 2 pairs of glasses and a pair of gloves for only €27. The gloves are comfy as hell :D

...on a side note on my way back to school from Aldi I got a light sideswipe from a bus and was knocked off my bike, it's quite amazing actually i don't have a scratch on me and neither does my bike. I'm INDESTRUCTIBLE!

jaysus dave, glad to hear you're alright. Hope you gave a whole sh*t load of abuse to the driver.

cycling in and out of town everyday for the last few months has taught me a few lessons. in general bus drivers aren't that bad, they usually know that they drive a big vehicle that can easily hurt a cyclist, so they tend to give us a lot of room. that said, i have found a sweet spot on busses where you can grab hold of in traffic and get pulled along, although i wouldn't advise trying it, i'm just a crazy hippy.

now as for taxi drivers, there is plenty i could say about them and their complete disregard for cyclists, but i'm almost certain that type of language is not permitted on the forum.

i'm really starting to wish i had that tool kit from lidl...i desperately need a chain whip and cassette remover at the moment.

Barry, Bring your wheel down to mine tonight and I can sort it out for you (Plus bring my bottle back). I have all the bits to take that off.

Yeah, I commute by bike everyday between Dundrum and City centre and I agree with Barry, I've made mostly good experiences with bus drivers, I mean they are in a tough situation trying to negotiate their big vehicle through some of Dublin's narrow roads, but they do generally take care of cyclists. You also need to be aware that they might have a bit of a blind spot where they can't see you when you are passing by....

And yes, I also agree with taxi drivers showing more reckless behaviour in general than bus drivers. Also, I've seen taxi drivers totally ignoring/disregarding cyclists, especially cycle couriers - in fact, if I was a cycle courier I would go in disguise just to be safer!

to be honest from 7 years of cycle commuting i can say that theres no one group thats bad, most in each group are grand, some are really nice and the ocaisional *******.

Having said that, the only person to put me in hospital so far was a micra driver and last friday two little scumbags in a micra intentionally tried to hit me. Luckily my brakes work and i also managed to swerve but they still hit my front wheel. Luckily for them they sped off laughing and didn't stop. Luckily for me too as if they had i'd have been arrested for severe GBH and possibly worse.

Look at the retro road bikes with the curved front fork and the gears on the bottom tube. Real classics... Sad thing is I am old enough to remember them.
