Hi Ollie . I was recently in Leenane right beside killary fjord for a week of adventure with my school, we stayed at an adventure centre just outside leenane ,called Killary adventure centre who might be able to advise you on the trails as im sure they do a little bit of biking in the forest nearby.

You'll be close enough to the new Coillte trail in Oughterard which might be worth checking out. You can also ride sections of the Western Way walking route. You might get some local knowledge on the West Coast Wheelers forum. http://www.westcoastwheelers.com

A pleasant option is to take the Western Way trail that cuts up from Killary harbour a mile or two W of Leenane. Marked by a telecoms tower. This rough but pleasant trail can be followed, with varying degrees of marshiness, all the way to Peacocke's in Maam Cross, via the abandoned railway. For some miles it's tucked right under the edge of the Maamturks and is gorgeous on a nice day. An alternative is to cycle up and over Patrick's Well (Mamean, signposted from Recess village). This is rather steep on the Recess side, but more easygoing from the Maam village side (leave Keane's pub, cross the bridge, take the first right at the GAA ground, take the waymarked-signposted left after a couple of miles, then park at the gateway close to the bottom of the valley, and follow the waymarked pilgrim route up to Patrick's Well. Deep in the mountains, great spot.

There is a trail shown on the map which runs along the edge of Killary, from the old Killary Adventure Centre (now Sleepzone) to the youth hostel at Little Killary. This is rather marshy in spots, but otherwise a nice flat ride. The Western Way option is better, IMHO.

For the extremist hill walker type, most of the ridge of the Sheefry mountains is one long ride, once you've got your bike up there.

And, finally, for a lovely road ride, try Doolough pass and the roads off it.
