View Full Version : How many parts will need replacing???

After the beginners spin around Ballinastoe a few of us decided to a lap of the short loop while waiting for the last group to get back... Unfortunately, at the end of the first trail just as I started up the hill I had a catastrophic chain failure.

The chain (see some of the chain links below) became ball-like and forced the derailleur in to the wheel where in bent a spoke and the chain took a few lumps out of nearby spokes.

I have a new HG73 chain so I'm not worried about that BUT
The chainrings are quite a bit worn and a bit gouged any chance of a new chain working with old rings? (and for that matter cassette - how do you tell how worn a cassette is??)
the derailleur looks ok, what are the chances of it surviving? (it's XT)
and finally, does anyone know if OC Tuning have this sort of stuff in stock???

you'll probably need to replace the inner and middle chainring and the cassette, the spokes that you bent/snapped and as for the derailleur .. well .. that would depend on how much it bent and whether or not you can bend it back.

As for OC tuning, no idea really .. give him a call tomorrow!

Take the last letter in your name, then whatever number that is in the alpahabet, take that and divide by the number of days since you last kissed a girl. Then multiply that by the number of girls you kissed in the last year and divide by 4....it'll be that many parts...

Dont ring James too early tomorow. He was in Waterford at the last DH race, so always takes the Monday off. Chances are, he wont answer the phone til Tuesday.

That can't be right I'm going to have to change the chain so it going to have to be at least one

Crap, there goes the biking plans out the window again :(

For those interested:

After an inspection from James of OC Tuning it was discovered the bottom bracket was also on the way-out. He gave me a good deal on a Shimano Deore Chainset and Bottom Bracket so it wasn't worth considering any other cost saving plan.

It also looks like the Derailleur survived ok, which is quite impressive considering the hammering it must have got.

So 'Old Betsie' is back (thanks to JamesOC and PaddyB).
Most importantly I think I've discovered what the original problem was...

I knew you'd have to reply.

Just because you don't get something doesn't mean squat. The post you warned me was 'foolish' in the 'Wanted - Bike weighing scales' thread was actually 100% factual scientific information, how can that be foolish???

And as far as it being interesting, almost everything you can touch has been designed or modified by science, including every piece of biking equipment. If you disagee with all that just look at the stats:

I'm not dragging you into anything. I just cut & pasted a thread name started by Fergal that happened to have your name in the title.
(I also didn't leave any suggestions on how you could be madeover)

I'm happy as long as none of my parts need to be replaced.
