Hi there, just wondering is it possible to cycle up lug? I was thinking of starting from glenmalure - past the Hostel to the head of the glenmalure valley and then following the ridge over to the lug's plateau. I guess what I'm asking is if this involves a load of hike-a-bike? Thanx, D

depends on your definitions of cycle...

I took the route you are talking about, there was a fair bit of hike a bike (mind you I'm 63 stone or so), the climbing wasn't so bad I just wasn't quite fit enough back then for it to be viable. The only real hike a bike part is the saddleback between Lugg and the approach hill as it's boggy as a boggy thing in parts (hub deep).

Once up top you have to be careful to get down the decent mtb route, I think it's between the north and south cage - I wouldn't know because we got very lost and headed towards carlow - buggered me up big time as I way underestimated food and was destroyed, although as a bonus I got my all time top speed of 42.5mph.

Doable but start early with a good map and spare food.

It's fairly rideable though there there's a lot of hike a bike, and it's quite physically demanding. Also it's exposed and "relatively" high altitude so cloud cover can close in rapidly reducing visibility drastically so don't attempt unless it's a clear day or you're confident with a map and compass (and even then I'd recommend doing it on foot previously or with someone who has!). Definitely don’t do it solo and ensure you bring a few clothing layers.

Thanks lads. Myself and two cat1 road riders are going to give it a go tomorrow - provided that the weather holds. I've walked, ran and ice climbed up it (day & night) so nav is not a problem. But this will be my time cycling it. Cheers, D

Hey Del, myself and a mate are planning on doing Lug on Monday (day off work), starting about 10am if that was of any interest !

Very poor weather this morning called a halt to the Lug spin. We headed from cruagh over to prince William's seat instead. It was a bog fest to end all bog fests! I now understand the phrase "as boggy as a boggy thing" and "hub deep bog". But it was good fun. We'll try and go to lug maybe next w'end. D

I'd be up for it next weekend.

If your still going throw up a post!!
