Hi all,

Am back on my road bike and am getting numb feet around the ball of my feet. This is mainly on my left foot. I have wide feet - my left is possibly wider than the right. Have moved the cleat about, which works briefly and then the numbness starts again. Switched from Look pedals to platform spds. Changed my shoes for this. My Specialized road shoes are slightly tighter than my Shimano mtb shoes though I don't have to squeeze into either. Being a man it's something I've just put up with for years.

I don't really get this on the mountainbike but that is probably because of the constant pedal position changing etc.

Has anyone else had this problem and and more importantly have you sorted it out? If the solution is wider shoes who makes them.

Sounds like a hot-spot, caused by all of the force you're imparting into the pedals being concentrated at one location (i.e. the ball of your foot) You should try using a pair of shoes with a really stiff carbon sole which will eliminate this point loading and spread it across a wider area. Try using the road pedals again too.

I got some "Party Feet" gel insoles from the chemist for about €6.

Women put them into high heels, and they fit in under the balls of your feet.

You can sometimes get them in Lidl or Aldi for about €4.

I never had problems with spds on the mountain bike.

But, when I had spds on the road bike, but they were so painful, I changed to the 'proper' flat pedals within a week.

I got some LOOK 247's and a pair of Look RS Comps. I have a pretty wide foot also, and these were the only shoes I could fit into without breaking the bank!

Instead of getting the painful 'hot-spot', my feet would go numb, untill I tried the the gels.

Give me a shout on 086 3236303 if you have any problems finding a pair, though you shouldn't as nearly every chemist will have them, maybe even TESCO.
