Howya folks,

Purchased a Trek 6000 hardtail during the summer to get meself back into MTB'ing after a 10 year absence. Have enjoyed the likes of Djouce, Ballyhoura :) and a few other spots since getting the bike.

I want to do a bit of road cycling and so am looking to purchase smoother tyres. The stock tyres are Bontrager's 26x2.25 on the front and 26x2.20 on the rear. Looking at road tyres for MTB's on wiggle I'm seeing the likes of 26x1.75 (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Panaracer_Crosstown_Tyre/5360043624/) and 26x1.5 (http://www.wiggle.co.uk/p/cycle/7/Schwalbe_City_Jet_Tyre_and_Tube_Set/5300003751/) - are these tyres thinner simply as they're designed for road use and will they fit the rims I have on the bike?

Apologies for the newbie q's - but don't wanna end up with tyres I can't use..:o

Cheers
Hatcho.

hey chief
get these:
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=17333

they'll do the road just fine, they also do trails very well
don't go lower than a 2.1 for dual-purpose use

Cheers for the quick reply! Would a proper set of road tyres (as opposed to dual purpose) be a realistic option? Then I'd just swap them over for the few times I'd take to the tarmac...

I use Swalbe City Jets on mine for the road. Pump them up to 80psi and yer flying. Just watch yourself on wet manhole covers. 14ish euros on CRC.

nah - that's too much hassle, just get the Crossmarks, pump them up for the road, let them down for the trails

Fair enuffski - that's what I'll do so. Cheers again for the advice...

I think you'll be driven made changing tyres all the time (and using this as a reason not to go for a weekday spin in the rain )

Get a cheap set of 2nd hand wheels and have fitted with the slicks on them ready to go.
I bought a complete pair of 2nd wheels for €60 and I just swap them over for road training
takes 2 minutes to do - how long will it take you to swap over 2 sets of tyres (twice)
