There's an article in today's Sunday Business Post about the new Volunteer Rangers and the DMP. It gives a good explanation of who these guys are and what they're up to.
If you encounter the Rangers while you're out, don't be afraid to stop and chat, they won't hurt you.

"Strictly speaking, mountain bikers shouldn’t be using the paths through the forest. However, the rangers have adopted a tolerant approach, since there isn’t really any other facilities for mountain bikers in the area."
excuse me..a feckin mountainbiker built every single path through the forest up there !! the poxy walkers would still be wobbling along the fireroads still if the Mountainbiker hadn't been on his hands and knees with a bushsaw cutting his way through the forest !!
this bullshit is starting to make me sick!!
That is laughable, if I wasn't so far away right now I'd be writing to them to put some issues straight.

In fairness I think they are basically saying that while it may be illegal, which it is, that it's allowed. They don't need to say anymore on the subject, if they go all out and say yes mountain biking is allowed then that causes headaches with other users of the mountain getting concerned.
