View Full Version : What bike will I buy?
Hey guys, I know there are alot of poeple in the club who know a lot more about bikes then I do so I'd love some advice.
I'm looking for a dual sus bike I can have a bit of fun on, something with a decent amount of travel that I could do a bit of downhill on but something I can still cycle up the mountain, I've been eyeing up the Lappierre Zesty in super store but seems a but expensive for what it is. Seen great deal on a 2007 Cannondale prophet, was €1750 I think. I'd really like to have adjustable travel forks also which prophet had.
What you guys think? Might have to move fast to get that Cannodale though.
I've also been looking at Kona Dawg in Cyclogical.

How about a Specialized Pitch or a Giant Reign?

I have the Reign and if I was going to buy again, I would go for the same. Love the bike. Does everything and still grand cycling up hills and the like. Check out: www.beyondbikes.com - This is where myself and Oisin got our bikes. They have really good deals on ex demo bikes which can be really highly specced and in perefect condition.

If you are going to go for something big and bouncy I would get a Reign like the lads said. You gonna keep the lappiere as well?

Actually, depends how bouncy you want... You're welcome to a go of mine. Would probably go for the Zesty if I wasnt racing a bit of DH and as rough with it. Had a sit on one of them out in the Superstore. Amazing... Feels like an XC bike and weighs the same as an XC bike yet has 6"!! Deadly....
Thanks for quick response lads, ya I'm looking for something bouncy which will take the abuse of going fast down those DH type trails in 3rock.
I'll eventually trade in my Lappiere for a hard tail.
That Giant looks like a good deal, also seen a stumpjumper on that site for good price
http://www.mcconveycycles.com/products.php?plid=m1b0s4p3402
or is that really a XC bike?

Stump Jumper is what I suppose they call an all mountain bike which is for a bit of everything. If you want a downhill bike from them you would want a pitch or a enduro...
Giant is probably your best bet for a big bouncy bike if you are going to keep your Lappiere as well and exchange it for a hard tail later...

The Stumpjumper is a bit more XC-leaning than the Reign. That deal is only for the Small size too.
My Fantasy bike is the '07 Commencal Meta 5.2.
If you're looking for a Large - yours for only €1499 from France! The 5.1 is €1999. €65 to send to Ireland.

Has got fantastic reviews - seemingly better than the '08 one.

liam,
check out pauls cycles
http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.php?plid=m1b0s1p0
they have a load of giant and other brand bikes at reduced prices (basically last years, or even earlier years stock).
They don't always have all sizes but you can get some very good deals.

Hmmm, rumour has it that an awesome all mountain / trail bike will be put up for sale next week exclusively on the MAD forum (unless of course it none of ye want to buy it, then I'll be pimping it around all the other clubs).
Might be just what you are looking for Liam....stay tuned.....

I've a prophet, it's deadly, goes up hill too although I have all the lockout and adjustable techfanglery that one could possess. Goes faster than I can downhill. Bit of a bitch to cycle uphill without lockout however, s'pose that goes for all of the above? I like it anyway.

what would your reasons for selling be richie?
I'm thinking of getting rid of one of mine as there's no need for 2 XC bikes. would like a HT and something bigger...although, i can't really do anything about it until the end of June. grr
Thanks again lads, yeah the bikes on that site Ben posted look very good but I never heard of them. Does anyone know the bikes, can't even find reviews of them online.
I hold off for now, let me know if your selling something that might be suitable Richie, thanks.

The main reason is cos i figured out i prefer the xc race side of things. Also now that i commute to work on a road bike I've figured out i quite like that too :-).
All that adds up to a full suss thats been used once this year...

Ahh Richie! Its a slippery slope... Next think you know your shaving your legs more often than your head, and asking people which is the best moisturiser!! Whats the club coming to? Soon Fergal will be seen in lycra....... TOO LATE !!!!

Oisin has one and its a monster, all mountian and suitable for DH too! expensive but you pay for quality components!
Too much choice, just don't know what to go for.

That is some deal Martin posted. Carbon chainstays and all! :O Seems 2000 is the price to pay for a seriously good bike. Think the improvements over that price are very minimal.

Liam I would go for the bike Martin posted... A friend of mine has one and permantly seems to have a simle on his face talking about it....
Right so, Rocky Mountain Slayer it is, what size do I go for?
ollietrex
31-05-2008, 05:41 PM
How tall are you? I would say the 16.5 which I would class as a medium....
have a chat with Oisin regarding size
NigelS
31-05-2008, 07:37 PM
maybe Oisin would let you have a go on his before you decide...it might help influence your decision. you don't want to buy something that isn't comfortable
Martin
01-06-2008, 08:05 AM
yup nigel is right! need to try and see first for size! 16.5 is very small ollie!
my RM ETSX is a 18inch and it is grand!
Liam take a spin out to oisins and get a spin onhis and see if it is a good fit or not!
for me top tube is most important as I have arm of an orangutang!
I'm 5'11'' last time I checked.
Yeah, I'll try out Oisin's if the opportunity arises.
Anyone got Oisin's number then?
I txt'd Oisin Fitz and apparently he doesn't have a slayer. :-)
Is it Oisin Boydel maybe? Anyone know?
paddyobrien
04-06-2008, 10:13 PM
yep. will text you his number
Yeah it's Oisin Boydell alright Liam, that would be way too much bike for young fitzy, try him at this address oisinboydell@gmail.com.
Only thing I'll say is that from what i have read your looking at the sxc50 slayer??. Well Oisin's bike is a higher spec slayer. The reason i say this is I am also looking at getting a big suspension, do it all type bike, and from what I have read it is worth going the extra bit to the sxc 70 slayer.
If I had 3 grand sterling I would Tom. :-)
Cheers Lads.

neither will the poor deer, big bikes are great for rustling/ramming/stampeding herds of deer...
