View Full Version : The Shed Thread
Well seeing as we are getting our garage converted, I need a home for the garage contents, so I need a shed.
Inspired by Don's epic construction project, I have decided to build rather than just buy one, so here's what I have:

and here's where it's going:

Starts this weekend and has to be finished in 2 weeks before the garage demolition starts!

looks like it's gonna be a good size Barry- was looking at new ones at the weekend - some decent value in Johnstown garden centre for a 10 x 8 delivered and assembled got about 650
but then I'd have to get rid of the old one somehow, so I'm thinking of putting an extension onto my current one - like a Franken-shed - a horror of a yoke to look at - but if I can get the 3 bikes moved to the 'extended' part of it - I'd have loads more room....there may be another shed thread on the way...........you've been warned

anytime you see 'inspired by don' you just know there's trouble around the corner!
The shed is going to be 14' x 8' with a pretty verandah to the front so I can sit out in the evening sun and sip my sundowners and be all mellow...
It will be more of a chalet than a shed I suppose, as it will be insulated (floor initially) and have slate roof tiles and power. I will have the option of insulating it fully at a later date and using it as an external room.
To buy a garden shed would be cheaper but would only be good for use as a shed and to buy a 'chalet' would be waaay too expensive, so buying the better quality materials myself and self building is the way to go.
Say's he who hasn't started yet...
Also, my father-in-law is a retired builder, so he will be helping out/guiding me and generally telling me what to do..
Will your bike actually be allowed in this luxury chalet?

Looks good. You should see the bomb bunker/shead my Dad put in our garden. It's deadly for storing our bikes and it's fully insulated with electricty AND a beer fridge. If it wasn't full of scuba diving equipment and bikes it would be an average size flat. We did away with the old wood garden shed after some little knacker broke into it.
The bike will have squatters rights on it :)
mmmm beer fridge....
If it's going to be a proper man shed don't forget to wire it for d'telly too!!

What about the bunker, you have to have a bunker!
Think of it as an excuse to get a mini digger
I've done my time with mini diggers, thank you very much.
Good man bazz, hope you left enough room in the garden for a pump track and then we can all call over on the long summer evenings...

actually don, if you could channel that rage into building me a nice bike storage shed that'd be great .. and it would prove my previous statement wrong .. go on .. prove me wrong!

Hmmm, a Wendy Fence, I like it...
What a shitty weekend to pick to build a shed....
Here's what it looks like by Monday evening:

Got through a lot but lost most of Sunday and half yesterday to the rain. Powertools and water don't mix well :(
Well, at last the shalet* is complete!!
It has a split personality..

wow!
This is the reason I haven't been out trailbuilding the last few weeks. This weekend was the deadline to complete the shed and transfer the garage contents into it, prior to the builders starting in on the garage conversion...
oh, and I'm also going on holidays on Saturday so will miss the race. THat's why I haven't volunteered for anything on the day.

Instead of 'Deadliest Catch', we have 'Deadliest Shed' :)
I've invented a new sport called 'shed surfing'... You climb up on the apex of the roof and assume a surfing position and wait for a landslide. Photo to follow...

we need to see if it is a real man-shed? is there a beer fridge and sound system in it?
Unfortunately not yet... It will be powered up in time though.

the former club-chairman has a beast of a shed, you could fit a full extended Romanian family in it and transport them to China! its very flash indeed...

yep, something to aspire to for sure, some nice ramps onto the roof and a landing ramp in the garden would go very well in my garden....
Well the playhouse wasn't part of the original plan, but friends of ours had the playhouse, dismantled, at the end of their garden for the last 2-3 years and it was heading for the skip, so I took it and did it up. I had to replace some of the timber but it wasn't too bad.
As for the shed, it wasn't rocket science, but I did have my father-in-law helping and advising during the process which made all the difference.
The base is sitting on 4" blocks and some DPC. The base is 4"x2" pressure treated timber with 3/4" waterproof ply as the floor (decking used for verandah bit). Walls are 3" x2" rough timber at about 12" centres and clad in 6" pressure treated shiplap/weatherboarding. Its wrapped in heavy duty plastic before the shiplap went on to further waterproof it.
Roof joists are 4"x2" pressure treated timber again and sitting on them are sheets of 1/2" waterproof ply. On top of that is under-roof felt and it is finished in Shingle tiles.
Too much information??

not at all - I'll use your info as a template for a future shed/refuge from wife-who-is-chasing-me-with-rolling-pin-for-buying-too-many-bikes!
That's brilliant! Makes my Wendy house look like a POS!
Point of Sale?? You've even got a cash register in yours??? Way impressed...
