Grainne, are you upgrading from vbrakes to these (disc brakes)?

Gogs
03-06-2008, 02:04 PM
Hey DiamondG. Yup, I think I killed my vbrakes so time for some disc brakes!

Martin
03-06-2008, 02:07 PM
gogs check your mail! graham is concerned your wheels are not disc compatible, post a link to your Trek bike! from memory it could handle both! the frame anyway, but the wheels are important! fingers crossed they are good!

are your wheels disk ready? fairly easy to spot .. the hub on the left side will have 6 bolt holes to mount hte disks to.

Also, do your frame and fork have mounting points for the disk brakes? Again easy to spot, theres be a mounting bracket near the hub on the frame and fork.

I know that the frame has the drop outs for disc brakes. Don't know about the wheels though. The Trek site says I have the following:

Alloy front, Shimano RM60 rear hub; Bontrager Camino rims

http://www.trekbikes.com/int/en/bikes/2007/archive/4300#

Are these OK? IF not, what wheels should I get?

Thanks for the help!

paddyobrien

hmm .. does not look like the wheels are disk compatible. The frame and forks look fine though.

As for wheels, you're probably best to scout around for a pair of second hand ones. Stick a wanted post up here, on mtbireland.com and epicmtb.com and you shoudl be able to source a pair.

Whats wrong with your vbrakes by the way?

I have an old avid one kicking around at home that you could have. Could be a good temporary fix while you're looking for wheels etc

Looking at the tech docs for those wheels I don't think you are going to be in luck.

My kinda thinking is that unless you can get a set of wheels second hand with the correct hubs etc you might be better actually buying a bike with disks as standard. Once you add all of the bits together and the price you could get for your bike it would probably pay a good bit towards a new or second bike with decent spec components.

Just my two cents

held for gogs until gets to the end of investigations ;-)

Gogs

Ahh poo!! I'll have a go on the other sites this evening!!

As for the crack about a bike with decent spec, I LOVE my trek. I just bought it and its cool! ;o)

And there's nothing really wrong with the V brakes except that I think I broke the back one and I ain't had time to fix it yet! Plus, I was advised (no names being mentioned Martin) that discs are better in the wet! If that was just ground work Martin, you're a clever man!! ;o)

Martin

salesman tactics gogs I was priming you for them before I sold them! ;-) but disk brakes are a good upgrade for an mtb the lads will agree!

what do you mean Back for Sale!! You didn't even wait that long! I'm still investigating!

diamondG

Gogs, don't worry about investigating it on sites, its easier to just do a visual

inspection (and I don't think any site will say for definite).

Paddy's post above has what you need to check for.

My guess is that they won't fit though, not without getting disc hubbed wheels somewhere at the least. But check the things in Paddy's post.

They would be a great upgrade, alot better than vbrakes and as Martin says, particularly in the wet.

But if you need to get wheels, or if the forks or frame don't have mounts, then it may not be worth it, could be pricey if no one is selling wheels etc

I'm selling a set of disc brake wheels. Mavic XM819 tubeless rims on DT Swiss hubs laced with DT Swiss black double butted spokes. Includes quick release skewers. You can use tubeless tyres directly without a conversion kit with these rims, or else just standard tyres with tubes. They are about 7 months old with some minor cosmetic scrapes on the rims but in perfect working order. Selling due to upgrade. €150.

Instead i'll offer to supervise the whole operation so that she, or anyone else, can then do it for themselves in future!

plus, its much nicer drinking tea and shouting at people than actually working!

Hey MArtin/Paddy,

What do you think of these? Is there a particular size I should get?

paddyobrien

grainne they'd be great, but is martin not including the rotors with the brakes?

If not then i'd assume 160 is what you'd want but again you'd need to check with martin about what size disk they were originally for as they'd have different adapters with the brakes depending on that.
