so, as i'm on some kinda non-biking (for another 2.5weeks) fitness buzz, i'm toying with the idea of trying to do the marathon this year. anybody interested? we could get a little MAD charity fund going maybe? the take up on the MAD 6-pack challenge didn't go down so well...but i'm more hopeful about this one!

nigel, i though cannabis was only legal in Holland, but I hear you can get it easy enough in Lourven too!

i'm already signed up for the marathon this year and was thinking that some MAD running gear might be interesting. would definitely be on for getting some charity dosh together. trying to come up with some cross training-mtb and road running-schedule to make the training a bit less harsh on the knees

good man Jonnie. have you done it before? Fancy giving me some advice about how to get started? I had my first run since hurting my ankle today and it felt pretty good. The only other gruelling thing that i've done is the annacurragh thing, which was rather difficult!

on the marathon website there's a 'get you around' training programme-did my first one on that schedule and got me around just fine. this'll be my third. general advice is lots of running and a good sports massage every few weeks if you're getting sore.

marathon advice on an mtb forum eh,who'd have thunk it. you'd probably get kicked out of epic for this kind of thing.

Nigel

Get yourself a copy of this months Irish Runner & there's a full article on how to train for the marathon including a training plan from here till then depending on what time you think you'd like to do! Out of interest why do you want to do the marathon?

Unless you want to spend at least 3-4 hours running a week, upping that do 6-8 hours toward the end and potentially sacrificing spins for long runs, I'd say stick to the 1/2 in September and try a few of the series on the way and see how you go!

If you feel good by the 1/2 and want to step it up, then you can try the marathon. Don't get me wrong I think it's great you are willing to try it, but personally I think marathons are overhyped - sometimes the challenge of doing one sounds really cool and alluring - but the reality is to get there you just need to do lots and lots of running!

Good luck anyway! See you out on the trails sometime!

heya Jackie,

the half sounds like something more do-able at this stage, and I would definitely like to try the 5 and 10 in july and august.

the challenge does sound alluring all right...it's about time i stepped up my game in a lot of things. I need to pick something, set a goal, stick with it until the end. So, apart from it being a physical challenge, it's also a personal challenge. Also, as it's the summer I'll have a fair bit of free time - Long days, no college etc. so i'm able to sacrifice time. In the future it's going to be harder to do that, so I think that now is the time.

Also, cheers for the reply about the AR stuff. I'll be looking into it when I get back to Dublin on the 25th.

I'm open to any other advice obviously... :P

Ummm, I know this is pretty crazy idea Nigel, but why not mountain biking? ;)

The marathon champs are coming up soon, so that would be a good one (My goal for those is not to come Paddy last) or you could try a road challenge like the wicklow 200 (the Sean Kelly tour of Waterford has a 160km spin up and around the Comeraghs in August (http://www.multimedia-instruction.com/wcc/kellystyle/3.pdf).

A triathlon? I would do one over a marathons any day, but I swim like a bag of rocks...

You might be onto something there Richie... Don't think there can be any competition between mtb and road running. That's the difference between mtb and road cycling except, worse!

Richie, will you be at the race on Sunday? Can you bring along my bar if you are?

I'll be there - pity, was getting used to it in the back window of my car...looks class there.

Jeez Richie, it'll be well melted at this stage after all the nice weather.

howdeeeeeee Richie.

I'll be doing biking as well! I'm going to have free time this summer so I intend to make use of it and not be so lazy. the marathon champs are on my list already :P I haven't done them before. As for the triathlon...i used to be a fairly handy swimmer when i was a bit younger, so i have thought about this. I need to start swimming again though (join a gym/pool) and get a road bike. It's been a pricey year living away from home so they'll have to wait for the moment

you'll need a haircut too if you're gonna be swimming!

You're right Morgan - its roadie shaped now.

That's cool. Roadie bars on a mtb are the new matching brake levers I hear.
