Proposed Trip to Wales

Anybody interested in a trip to Wales in august?


Put your name down and dates you would be willing to go I will try and get some consensus on dates and get prices based on that (If I dont get consensus I will have to put on my dictators hat and make an arbitrary decision!)

Not sure if it gets in the way of any of it but the trans wales is the 13th - 26th of August and I know they use some of the trail centres. Might be worth a look on there site:- http://www.mtbtransuk.co.uk/

Rough idea on prices:


Making a very bold assumption that you could squeez four people into a car...


Late sailing (cruise) on Thursday and return Sunday evening would be about €431 so about €110 a head.

Sail nasty early on Friday (Swift) and return Sunday evening €506 so about €130 a head.

the issue is not numbers per car but getting bikes over! 4 people will have 4 bikes! a van would help but not many in the club have vans! I can carry one other bike! Ollie will be doing the transwales so doubt he'll take his van which leaves John Harnett and Conor!

I'd be interested in this too! Cept not definite about that weekend. Next one might be better but will go with the masses. Have car but can prob only take 1 more person & i bike as it's not that big! :(

.. right.. Liam, if you want to do a feasibility study on spain we can do a comparison and see which is the best option (i certainly have no objection to a sunnier climate for a weekend!).


I also did a bit of checking, its similar prices to travel the first weekend in August(bank holiday weekend) which will give either more time or people to option to save a holiday day.

Oh and a two people per car arrangement brings the rough cost from 100 - 150... a big blue van would be the job alright.

Good to see such an ethusiastic response from all, would like to nail this one down in the next couple of weeks.

Also, there is another option later in the year that I know a few people are interested in - doing one of the UK XC and/or marathon races as part of a Wales weekend.


The final round of their marathon and XC NPS is on the 12/13th of September in northern Walse (about 30-40 min from Hollyhead!)

The UK races are amazing events - 100s of people racing (about 3-400 in total doing the last marathon which was not that 'well' attended!) and races both days that would suit all abilities... For instance, there is a 25km, 50km, 75km and 100km marathons on on the Saturday.

bear in mind that if you're thinking of bringing vans they're a bit more expensive than cars. my work wasn't all that keen on me taking my van abroad last year but if i can this year i'll let you know. weekend of the 8th would be best for me.

Ok so here is a plan that I can book if we have intrest.


I wanna go do that race in wales so if we could get a few people I can fit about 8-10 bikes + one other person in the van so we take another two cars with four people and there gear in and split the ferries between people which makes it a lot cheaper. Go over friday and maybe do a small ride... Do the races for the laugh on sat and sun or we can sort out people taking a car and the van while a couple of people do the race and then spend a couple more days doing the trails.


Being selfish this suits me as I get to race and its after the trans wales... For every one else you have the blue van to carry all the kit and bikes for the couple of days we are over so it saves a bit of money if you are a cheap arse like me.


I have a bit of holiday left so thinking probably going from early friday to wednesday night. The pace of the week will fun with lots of curry, pasta and drinking as I love to cook and drink red wine.


So what do you reckon?

So we are looking at 2 seperate trips to Wales it seems, August and September.

I'm keen on August as it will be warmer and I am not very likely to be racing.

1st or 2nd weekend in August. Lets get some definite numbers down.
