View Full Version : Help wanted
Hi All.
I am trying to fit tubeless tyres...Michellin Mountain X'trem...Fergal, your suggestion of Maxxis Crossmark were not available on CRC...above were recommended to me in Bike Rack...they had to order a set of values for the rim so I need to use them with tubes for a couple of weeks.
Trouble is that I cannot get them onto the wheels...is there a knack to this. I have one side on...but cannot get the second side on. I am starting opposite the valve...is this right, does it make a difference? I was trying to avoid using tyre levers, but resorted to plastic ones cause I couldn't see any other way of doing it...I have just snapped one...is it supposed to be this hard?
short of bringing the wheels and tyres to the Bike Rack, any suggestions?
THANKS
Fergal

I usually use a soapy water mix which helps them slide onto the rim easier - ensure you have plenty of bubbles, get the whole lot really soapy and wet, but you can be unlucky and get a rim/tyre combo that are just REALLY tough to fit - Graham Diamond went thru some serious hardship - Graham - did your warm bath, candle and Sade CD efforts work?

As with any tyre make sure the bead which you have on is sitting in the "V" of the rim - this will give you a bit of slack to work with.
I found this extremely useful:

I have only fitted a tubeless type once but I read on another forum that the "knack" is to ensure that amount of the tyre rim that you've fitted so far is sitting in the "well" in the middle of the wheel rim thus giving the maximum amount of slack to pop on the last bit. This certainly worked for me after struggling for 20 mins prior to remembering this bit of info ! An extra pair of hands helps in this exercise. Then lots of soapy water to help make the seal between the rim and the tyre then and pump like a lunatic with a track pump (or preferably go to a garage) until you hear a very very loud pop which will be the tyre making the seal. Don't forget to pour your stans, copydex, whatever in to the last bit of the type before popping it on.
Damn, Morgan got there before me !!!!
After much huffing and puffing, soapy water, keeping beads in well of rim, and an extra pair of hands, tyres went on. Didn't hear a pop as I inflated with track pump. Lads in Bike Rack said I would need to go to garage. As I said I am using tubes for the moment so I ain't too worried for now.
I am not looking forward to trying to get them off again! Now where is my Sade CD...

john the popping sound they're referring to is when the tyre seats properly on the rim which generally only happens when you're using them tubeless.
You also generally need to go to about 50 or 60 PSI before this happens. Once its seated you let the air back out and then pump to whatever pressure you want (generally 30PSI or so)

"Graham - did your warm bath, candle and Sade CD efforts work?"
used the well in the middle of the rim and that worked a treat.
The bath and candles did loosen em up a bit for showtime though
ps: I did notice they like to be cuddled afterwards

great tool for UST tires! but you need lots of suds/spit to lube the rim of the tires!
this is great stuff too, its like a tube of German spit !!

maxxis ignitors are the best tyre money can buy for mountainbiking, end of story..anything else is a waste of time..
in my house there are 7 mountainbikes..6 of them are using maxxis tyres..the michelins needed tubes after about a week..after my wife who weighs about 55kgs punctured them..
they'll do for cycling to work on ..ignitors when its wet,dry ..youname it..i'veused them all amd they are the best..
