Hi there,

I haven't been montain biking in the last 5-7 years but after a visit to Ballinastoe last weekend, have decided I definately want to get back in the saddle.

I had a Specialized Rockhopper A1 FS a few years back and really liked it. Was planning on buying a new Rockhopper with Discs this time around and was just sussing out other options before I make the purchase.

Can anyone comment on Gary Fisher's bikes and their possible merits (if any)over specialized?

Any comments/advice greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Brian

Hey Brian,

Xc wise you should look at Giant, Specialized, Lapierre, Canyon. I don't know much about Gary Fisher but rarely see them on the trails which would suggest they're not very good. I certainly wouldn't buy one over a Rockhopper...

Hay Steve, Gary Fishers are not too bad.

I have had one for the last few years and am very happy with it. A bit more exclusive than the run of the mill Giants you see all the time. Trek actually own the brand.

The Genesis range of hardtail have a nice long top tube, so you are a bit more stretched out.

Scrivo,

Thanks for the reply. I thought this myself. Also, they don't seem to be widely available (in terms of retail)in Dublin.

As i've said, I'm a bit rusty on components, groupsets, etc. It's been a while. I was thinking of going for the Rockhopper Disc which is now being updated for 09. Any opinions on it? I've heard the new frames are meant to be the business... It has LX rear mech and Deore FDM530 on front. I presume all of the Rockhoppers are solid enough investments anyway??

Thanks again for the advice.

tripoli,

for shimano MTB groupsets they go in this order (worst to best)

Deore, LX (called SLX now sometimes), XT, XTR

Generally you can't go wrong with a rockhopper or any other hardtail at the same price point from a big manufacturer. The best thing to do is try a few in shops and see which gives the most comfy position.

Looking at the bike, the spec levels are good (brakes, decent forks etc). The only thing you may wish to upgrade is to move to clipless pedals at some point butheres no rush on that.

Don;t forget to keep money for a helmet, gloves, rainjacket etc.

Hi there,

New to the forum and have a similar decision to make.

There are a couple of Gary Fisher Hardtails the Piranha and Tassajara which fit my budget. Has anyone owned or had experience of Fisher hardtails or of these specific bikes?

My budget for the bike is 750 - 900 euro. I've considered the Rockhopper disc, GF Piranha and Tassajara and Giant XTC 3 '09.

Which of these would be considered to be the better bike and are there any other good machines that I've missed in that price range?

Thanks.

You see a LOT of Gary Fishers in the UK they just don't seem to have made there way over to Ireland. By all reports there frames are fairly good so just compare the spec to a relevant giant etc and make you decision based on that.

Thanks for all of the input. I'm going to go for a '09 Rockhopper some time soon.

Maybe see some of you on the trails...

Thanks again.
