MAD Club Champion 2008!
2Congratulations to Graham Diamond who, thanks to hard work, fashion sense and general awesomeness, has been awarded the title of MAD Club Champion 2008! Congratulations also to Liam Phelan in third place and Steve Scrivener in second. They put in powerful performances in the icy conditions but couldn’t defeat His Gness.
Other awards on the day were:
- Most Awesome Racer – Melanie Spath
- Most Savage Spin – Ryan Sherlock
- Best Newcomer – Phil McDonagh
- Most Outstanding Contribution – Shane Geoghegan
There was also a special “Mattock of Appreciation” award for trailbuilding svengali Fergal J Kilkenny. A shameful “Worst Race Performance” award was presented to a humbled club chairman.
You can find photos from the day here, here and here .
MAD Club Champs 2008
1This year’s MAD Club Champs takes place on Saturday the 6th of December. The venue is the Blue Light Pub where we’ll meet at 10am and head into the nearby trails for tests of strength and skill (Fergal has been busy laying out an awesome course). After this we’ll retire to the Blue Light for a review of the past year, the awarding of trophies and the election of the club committee for 2009.
Current, past and prospective MAD members are welcome to come along – as are our favourite riders from other clubs. The dress code is: sickening. As MAD enters it’s 20th year of existence we want you to wear your most offensive jersey from the 80′s and 90′s (you can find a lot of them here). The more garish the better.
That evening the fun-times will continue in the Market Bar on Fade St. We have tables booked for 8pm. Wear your drinking pants and your dancing shoes.
MTB Training Courses
0It’s not every day you get private coaching from a World Cup level cross country and downhill rider but with Niall Davis’ training days you can.
Niall is a top three Irish international cross country rider who has spent the last summer running guided rides with partner Tarja Owens (herself a World Cup level female former pro and multiple Irish national champion) in picturesque Lake Garda.
Their company, All Mountain Experience has been a huge success and Niall and Tarja have
decided to share their knowledge by running training courses in the Winter season in Ireland.
Courses are run every weekend at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels with a maximum group of 8 for the first two groups and 4 for the advanced class.
The emphasis is on fun, this is not school after all but rather it is about furthering your confidence and skills on a mountain bike.
See posters below for details or email Niall or Tarja for details.

MAD Cyclocross Race This Weekend
0MAD are running Round 2 of the Supercross Cup this weekend in Tymon Park, Tallaght. The race takes place in the North part of the park and promises to be a fast and technical course with a good run-up along the way.
The underage race will begin at 12 noon, with races for all Senor categories at 1pm. Mountainbikes are welcome to take part.
Thanks to all the MAD members who have volunteered to assist at the race. If you haven’t been given a job for the day why not come along and spectate or even give the race a go – this will be an ideal introduction for anyone planning on racing next year.
Super Cross Cup 2008
0A four-race cyclocross series for Dublin has just been announced. Round one is this weekend in Corcaigh Park. MAD will be running round 2 in Tymon Park next week.
MTBs are welcome to take part in the races and these events would also be ideal for anyone wanting to give off-road racing a try for the first time.
“Improvers” Spin on Saturday
0
This weeks “improvers” type spin leaves from Taylors Three Rock at 10am on Saturday. The destination – you’ll find out on the day. If you’ve been through our beginners course you’ll manage fine. Bring all the usual essentials and if you have any questions – just ask.
MAD Beginners – The Next Step
0| From Kindlestown Beginners Ride |
We’ve just finished a month of MAD beginners rides (with over 50 riders turning up for some spins). So what’s next? If you want to continue riding with the club you should join up for 2009. You’ll find membership details here.
We’ll continue with a series of “easy” spins over the next few weeks. These will be at a level above the beginners spins, with less stops. However, they’ll still be at a manageable pace and nobody will be left behind. You can find details of the first spin in the club forum.
Make Your Vote Count!
1Cycling Ireland have just announced the final nominations for the CI Member Awards scheme. This gives ordinary CI members (licence holders) the opportunity to recognise peoples outstanding contribution to the sport. There are several mountainbikers in the list of nominees, starting with MAD’s own Fergal J Kilkenny, club secretary and prime-mover in trailbuilding who is up for the “Most valuable volunteer contribution in Leinster” award.

Then there’s Cait Elliot from UCD (nearly as good as being in MAD) nominated as “Best domestic based female Senior rider”

Another nominee deserving your support is Maeve Baxter for “Best Irish performance abroad” for her silver medal in the World Masters MTB Championships.
We’ll forgive the omission of MAD from the candidates for Best Club of the Year – it’s only fair to give someone else a chance in the spotlight now and again. You can see the full list of nominees here.
You can vote by by emailing awards2008@cyclingireland.ie up to November 14th. Each submission must include your name, club, license number and date of birth. Get your votes in and support the mountainbikers!
Beginners Course Round 3
2Following on from the success of the National Trail Day, and the second installment in Kindlestown and Glen of the Downs last weekend, we’ll be running the third installment of the beginners course in Ticknock/Three Rock Co. Dublin, site of some of the best trails around. We’ll meet at the lower car park in Ticknock at 9.45am on Sunday and start riding at 10am. Once again, riders will be divided into groups based on ability (or enthusiasm) and let around the trails by awsome MAD folk.
Take a look at our beginners pages to see what you should wear and bring with you. If you have any questions, send an email to committee@madmtb.com or just ask in the forum.
