Two MAD National Champions

Congratulations to Ryan Sherlock and Richie Close who became National XC Marathon Champions last Sunday. The event was hosted in Ballyhoura by MBCC. Ryan won the Elite race with a time of 03:19:51 , while Richie took gold in Masters with a time of 03:28:47. Also well done to Oisin Boydell who came 2nd in the Masters category with a time of 03:32:09. Ryan is now National Champion in both road (Hillclimb) and offroad (marathon) disciplines.

XC NPS Course Update

The MAD NPS crew have been busy all this week planning the season finale to the 2010 NPS.

From laptop programming to branch-lopping, all is going to plan! The bit of rain up on 3Rock this week is expected to have very little effect on the course we have designed and built for the race.

We have trimmed a few minutes of the original lap time by removing some climbs, accelerating/re-aligning some of the singletrack sections, and raking and smoothing out as many sections as we can.

Our intent is to provide the fastest and most fun course of 2010, and that you don’t even remember the climbs – just all the fun stuff! We are incorporating one of the driest forest sections in the whole of Ireland – Rock n Roll! This unique area never gets affected regardless of the weather and is currently dusty dry, a few slower corners have been by-passed to speed-up this whole section.

The open mountain/double track sections have had water channels cut-in and any puddles have been drained off down the hillside, we’ll also will be walking the course on the Saturday with mattocks and spades in hand to tend to any sections.

There is a great variety of trail on offer – rocky techy shallow climb, fast twisting super-dry forest singletrack, a very fast peaty descent through a parted sea of gorse onto downhill sandy singletrack, big wide doubletrack for the overtaking & the rider-up! lark, short sharp kickers to boost you up a bit, darker rooty singletrack bits, roosty bermy sections that you pedal all the way into and out of keeping ‘er on the gas, flat out double-to-singletrack over open mountain with a great view to the Sugarloaf mountain in Wicklow, and a bit of oul flat & climb fireroad for the recovery and energy-gel gulping, I really don’t think we’ve missed a thing!

MAD NPS Course Preview

The course is approximately 6.2 km long, taking about 28 minutes on a test lap for a fast Master (as ridden by test pilot Oisin ‘Bomber’ Boydell from Pronghorn Racing in dry conditions).
Start out on a short section of fireroad up from the carpark, then left and up the wide track and weave through the rooty short forest section and out onto the main ‘Strada Bianca’ fireroad. Hammer along this in the big ring, thinning-out the pack and trying to get a good lead on your opponents before slipping right and down the chute to ‘MX’.
Along MX, up the sharp short kicker and down the super-swoop, pop off the little jump at the bottom and on the gas again through ‘Back Breaker’ (digging this section nearly broke us!). Blast through the wide path and boost up the bank and into Rock n Roll!
Weave your way through this twisting fast & very dry forest, then out and up the short kicker of ‘Blue Oyster’ and onto the main fireroad climb. Crest the climb then left at the barrier and over the large slabs, left and along and down through the super-fast ‘T-Connector’ and warp down the sandy singletrack into upper ‘Rock n Roll’.
A quick zip through this section then sharp on the brakes a hard right up over the bank, then out and up the sandy path. Left at the fork, along and right at the fireroad, short shallow climb then left up the access road, across the linker, and blast down and right into ‘Sprint’ and continue across to ‘Turf Surfer’ – rip along this superfast & exciting double-to-singletrack, and drop down the gnarly root-step sections and out and right onto the fireroad.
Out of the saddle and hammer on to ‘Something Funky’ carving and ripping your way through the loose forest floor with plenty of mini-bermed turns and humps and pop out into the Start/Finish area.

MAD Presents NPS Final Round

The Mountainbiking Association of Dublin presents the final round of the 2010 cross country NPS on the 4th of July on Three Rock Mountain, Dublin. This will be an amazing race on a true MTB course featuring brand new superfast trails, courtesy of MAD Singletrack Engineering Dept. This race is also the fourth and final round of the 2010 Leinster XC League. Stay tuned for a course preview.

MAD on the Podium in Killarney

There was a good attendance from MAD at the second round of the XC NPS in Killarney on Sunday April 25th and we were rewarded with a couple of hard-earned podium positions.

Fergal was fourth in Veterans

while Oisin took third place in Masters.

MAD Results In First XC NPS

The IMBRC got the 2010 XC NPS off to a great start with their race in Slade Valley. Great organisation, a fantastic course and perfect weather made an ideal day of racing for over 240 competitors. MAD had some great results on the day:

Conor took bronze in Under-14

Mel won the Elite Women race.

Steve came second in Expert

Another victory for Oisin in Masters

Agata had a great win in the Sports Women race

Medals for MAD at Bunclody

MAD got the 2010 Leinster XC League off to a good start with podium finishes in three categories.

Sean came first in the Expert category.

Oisin took second place in Masters.

Agata was second in the Womens category.

Other notable finishes were Fergal Kilkenny, 4th in Veterans; Richie and Mark, 5th and 6th in Masters and Niall Horgan, 10th in Sports.

Leinster XC League Begins on Sunday

The first round of the four-race Leinster XC League takes place this Sunday in Kilbrannish, near Bunclody, Co. Wexford. New club Racing 795 have laid out an all-new course for the event. You can read more on IrishXCMTB.com.

4th April – Dundalk – Cuchulainn CC

11th April – Slade Valley – IMBRC (also NPS #1)

XC Development Series Round 2 – Ballyhoura

Round 1 of the XC Development Series was a huge success with 165 riders turning up to give it a shot in the snow at Ballinastoe. Round 2 takes place on March 7th in Ballyhoura, Co. Cork. You can find full details at www.irishxcmtb.com.

As part of his continuing support of the XC Development race series, Niall Davis from Biking.ie will be taking two groups of five riders out for a pre-lap (or part thereof, due to the length of the lap) of the Ballyhoura race circuit on the morning of the race. The aim of the pre-lap is to help the riders get through their first race with some hints and tips. The prizes go to the first 10 riders to contact them via the form on www.biking.ie. And don’t forget there is also a prize for the winner of the Sports B race to receive a private training day with Biking.ie!
